James 4:6 - But he gives us more grace. That is why Scripture says: “God opposes the proud but shows favor to the humble.”

Tonight we talked about pride and humility again.  It seems as though God keeps drawing us back to this topic.  I don't think we can ever learn enough about it though.  Pride is a biggie for most of us and humility is something learned and practiced.  We're not born with it.

We used two magnets to illustrate James 4:6 to the kids.  We tried to place the magnets together by pushing the sides with the same polarity together. The magnets kept jumping away from each other. We even let the kids try.  We explained that God's relationship to the proud is the same as the relationship between the two magnets and that people with a heart full of pride cannot get close to God.

We showed some movie clips then about pride.  We watched clips from The Karate Kid (again) and Groundhog Day.  We asked the kids if they saw themselves in either of those clips.

Then we talked about humility.  We Blindfolded one of the kids.  Then we had a second one clasp their hands behind her back. We instructed the one who was blindfolded to feed the other some chocolate pudding. We allowed the person being fed to speak out loud to direct the person feeding them...the first time!  The second time we did this exercise, we don’t allow the person being fed to give any instructions at all!  Messy!

We reminded the kids once again that none of them is greater than another and we all need each other and are called to put others before ourselves.

Romans 12:3-10 - For by the grace given me I say to every one of you: Do not think of yourself more highly than you ought, but rather think of yourself with sober judgment, in accordance with the faith God has distributed to each of you. For just as each of us has one body with many members, and these members do not all have the same function, so in Christ we, though many, form one body, and each member belongs to all the others. We have different gifts, according to the grace given to each of us. If your gift is prophesying, then prophesy in accordance with your faith; if it is serving, then serve; if it is teaching, then teach; if it is to encourage, then give encouragement; if it is giving, then give generously; if it is to lead, do it diligently; if it is to show mercy, do it cheerfully. Love must be sincere. Hate what is evil; cling to what is good. Be devoted to one another in love. Honor one another above yourselves.

We finished by watching some humility clips from Bruce Almighty, Fireproof, and Mean Girls then and asked the same question.  Do you see yourselves in any of these clips?
